Bristol's Booker and May chase Phoenix victory

BRISTOL challengers Jordan Booker and John May will be stepping up their bid for the Premier Motocross Championships in the second of the ten-round West Country series at the Phoenix Moto Park, Kingsteignton, near Newton Abbot, on Sunday.

Booker, who is a member of a team being run by former world champion Dave Thorpe, finished second to Cullompton's Jackson Evans in the first round at Landrake, near Saltash, a fortnight ago.

May, the title-holder, finished in fourth place, two points behind Luke Hill.

Ross Keyworth and 15-year-old Tommy Alba, who also finished in the top six will be in action in three half-hour races on one of the best spectator viewing circuits in the country.

There will also be three races for each of the three junior groups and three for past masters over the age of 35, 40 and 50.

The West Country grass racing season gets under way on Sunday with the Bristol Combine's meeting at Stanton St Quinton, on the Chippenham-Malmesbury road, at Hangar Farm.

Leading lights in the solo class include Leicester speedway star Steve Howe, Charles Saunders, Harland Cook, Rod Melksham and Steve Masters in the 500cc class, while Mark Williams and John Jefferies are expected to shine in the 350cc races.

Sidecar races are an added bonus and, with former British Masters champion Paul Whitelam, Mick Cave, Joe Mogg, Simon Heal and Cornwall's Myles Simmons and partners in action, there will be few dull moments.

Most of the Wessex Centre's leading sidecar trial crews will be contesting the BSSA's Reg Lewis Trophy event at Compton Greenfield, including Jon and David Tuck, Phil Sparks and Steve Radford and crewmen.

Paul Avery is also staging a comeback in the three or four lap event at Elmington Manor Farm.

There are two national trials in Devon.

The Sammy Miller series kicks off at Hound Tor, near Widecombe-in-the-Moor, with an entry of 83 solos and nine sidecar crews, who face 32 sections at Hedge Barton, Pitton, Paradise, Millwood and Hound Tor.

Entries in the main class include Peter Salt, Jon Souch, Jim Ashford, Colin Dommett and George Atkins, while Craig Mawlem, Anthony Rew, Keith Wells, Ian Baker, Peter Gaunt, Martin Gilbert and Martyn Wilmore are among those in action in the popular twin shock class.

The youth event is being staged by the Otter Vale club entirely off-road at Wolversleigh Farm, Sidbury.
