'Hunger Games': Why The Box-Office Odds Are In Its Favor

Riding high off its $150 million debut, experts predict that 'Hunger Games' isn't going to slow down anytime soon.

MTV News reported earlier this week that "The Hunger Games" opening-weekend sales surprised box-office experts, and we can see why. They originally projected a $70 million debut for the dystopian film. What actually happened was a $150 million weekend that propelled the film to the third-highest opening weekend ever.

That sparks the question: How will the movie fare its second weekend?

The film's debut dominated the sales of the one movie everyone was comparing it to: "Twilight." The vampire franchise's initial film brought in $69 million its first weekend and quickly declined from there. Will "The Hunger Games" suffer the same fate? Phil Contrino from BoxOffice.com doesn't think so.

" 'Hunger Games' is holding up very well. It's quite clear by now that it's not going to suffer from a sharp decline the way that 'Twilight' did," he said. "The reason for that is the fact that adults are into it and they don't always rush out opening weekend." BoxOffice.com is predicting $72 million this weekend — $2 million above predictions for its debut. Contrino continued, " 'The Hunger Games' definitely has a shot at hitting $400 million domestically. It's a great accomplishment for the first film of a franchise to hit that mark."

Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru agrees. "Overall, 'Hunger Games' looks on track to finish its U.S. run with $350 to $400 million, which would be higher than the first 'Twilight' and 'Harry Potter' films." He commented that the movie ended its first full week with about $190 million, which is a new record for a non-sequel. "I expect it to easily hold onto the box-office crown this weekend with sales in the neighborhood of $70 million."

While "Wrath of the Titans" and "Mirror, Mirror" aren't slated to surpass "Hunger Games" this weekend, Contrino thinks next weekend will be more of a race. "It'll be interesting to see whether or not 'Titanic 3D' or 'American Reunion' will take it down. It's going to be close." Pandya disagrees, "The April lineup is not too strong, so 'Hunger Games' may just remain #1 for three or four weeks total." The rest of the year, however, gives them some competition. "It may not end the year as 2012's top-grossing film as both 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'The Avengers' has the potential to become bigger blockbusters that play to broader audiences."

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

China officially tops one billion mobile subscribers

We heard last year that China was approaching 900 million mobile phone subscribers, and it looks like it's now finally hit the big one. The country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology confirmed today that, as of the end of February, there were more than a billion mobile subscribers in the country (1.01 billion, to be specific). As the AFP notes, that's individual subscriptions, which includes users with more than one phone, but any way you slice it that's a whole lot of cellphone users. Of those, 144 million are on 3G networks, which is fully double the number from April of 2011. Not surprisingly, much of that growth comes at the expense of landline phones, which have dropped a further 828,000 in the first two months of the year to 284.3 million. Internet use also continues to be on the upswing, with more than half a billion people having internet access of some sort, and 154.96 million having broadband access (up nearly five million during those same two months).

Free feast on College Green

PEOPLE in Bristol will be treated to a free feast when a project to save food from landfill comes to Bristol.

The Feeding the 5,000 event is coming to College Green in May to show how food that would normally end up in landfill can be used to produce a wonderful lunch.

It was an event that started in London and Bristol will now host the first such lunch outside of the capital.

The free lunch will be created by FareShare South West on May 12 with food saved from landfill.

It is being supported by local businesses and charities including the Soil Association, Bristol City Council, Food Cycle, Thali Cafe, Love Food, Kambe Events and Coexist.

Celebrity chefs – including Tom Herbert from the Fabulous Baker Brothers, Tom Hunt, Chris Wicks and chefs from the Thali Cafe – will prepare a lunch made from food that would normally end up in landfill, such as misshapen vegetables that are not usually sold in supermarkets.

Jacqui Reeves, project director at FareShare South West, said: "Bristol is the first city to host this event outside London – it's got 'Bristol mentality' written all over it. A free fun day, a free lunch plus we get to show the food industry how the four million tonnes of food they throw away can easily go to people who really need it."

Feeding the 5,000 will be on College Green from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, May 12.

'Titanic' Looks 'Spectacular' In 3-D, James Cameron Says

Film's 3-D conversion 'takes it to a whole different level,' director tells MTV News at U.K. premiere of re-release.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Vicky Nwosu-Hope

Nearly 15 years after "Titanic" became the biggest movie ever to grace the silver screen, director James Cameron has expanded his blockbuster into the third dimension.

On April 4, "Titanic" sets sail in 3-D after a painstaking conversion that Cameron believes enhances the picture's overall effect. MTV News spoke with the director in London, on the red carpet for the U.K. premiere of the re-release, which hits theaters days before the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

"It's really a dream come true to get this film back into cinema because it just has a whole different effect on people when they take three hours out of their life to just sit and have the unbroken experience and let the story take them along," Cameron said. "It can be quite a profoundly emotional experience, and you're not going to get that watching it on video. The 3-D just enhances the whole thing. It takes it to a whole different level. "

Cameron decided to begin the process in 2005, while he was prepping his next ambitious project, "Avatar."

"I was pretty convinced at that time that 3-D was really going to transform the cinema experience. I wanted cinema owners, the exhibitors, to embrace the conversion to digital projection, so that there'd be a place to show 3-D movies," Cameron said. "I was thinking of 'Avatar,' but I was also saying, 'Look, we can do films like "Titanic." We can take "Jaws," "Star Wars," whatever your favorite movies are, we can convert them to 3-D and give them a whole new life.' So we started doing test to see what a conversion of 'Titanic' would look like. We did a minute and a half of it, and it looked spectacular. "

The 3-D re-release offered Cameron the opportunity to reflect on what made "Titanic" a worldwide sensation. Cameron said he feels that it didn't have everything to do with the movie's young star Leonardo DiCaprio.

"Women could relate to it, not just because of the Leo-mania thing, but because a lot of young women struggle with the sense of identity in societal expectation. The character of Rose was really written very much about those ideas," Cameron said. "I think it was a simplification after the fact that [DiCaprio] is why women were so attracted to the movie."

Meet Terry Alderton, former Southend United goalkeeper turned comedian

" I'm still orange", Terry Alderton wails when I call him for our scheduled interview. "I can't get it off and I'm just sat here wondering what to do."

Dressing in drag and performing Tina Turner's Proud Mary got Terry through to the final of Sport Relief's Let's Dance only for him to be pipped to the winner's title by Rowland Rivron.

Fake tan dilemmas aside Terry says the experience was a good one and not too dissimilar to his nights out with fellow comedian Tim Vine.

"I was thrilled to do it and it was great fun", he says. "I am good friends with Tim and if we're on tour we often try and meet up and go out, play pool or do karaoke or something.

"Tim loves karaoke and his song is Proud Mary. When I was asked to do Tina Turner I wasn't sure but then I thought it might be a little hommage to me and Tim going out and I thought if I really went for it then I could pull it off.

"It's thrilling to think that the show made more than £1 million for charity."

Terry started on the comedy scene with his Perrier nomination back in 1999 and has enjoyed a variety of acting and presenting roles.

The former Southend United goalkeeper decided to pursue a career in comedy after winning the Sky TV show Star Search when he was just 18.

He says: "I've had quite a story really. I used to work in a restaurant on the weekends, peeling potatoes and washing up, and I used to tell the two chefs there, Mark and Steve, I think they were called, that I would be a comedy impressionist when I was older. They were real bullies and used to hold me down and pour tea on me but I used to make them laugh a bit with my impressions.

"Then I came home one day and announced to my mother that I was going to be a comedian. With my family's support I just did it. I think a lot of the time you can say you might do something and never get round to it. I just got on with it."

After just doing one open spot in a club in Southend Terry auditioned for Star Search, hosted by Keith Chegwin, and won the show.

He says: "I worked in Potter's holiday centre and so it was quite a mainsteam route really. I tried to do alternative comedy and they thought I was too mainstream but the mainstream audiences found me too alternative. To get to who I am now I must have gone through four or five changes."

Following his Perrier nomination Terry took up various TV roles including hosting the BBC National Lottery Red Alert with Lulu, parts in London's Burning, Holby City, The Bill and Waking The Dead and appearing as a gangster in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

He has continued in comedy with his unconventional routine featuring Terry and his two conflicting internal voices, but he says he has now learned to be himself.

He says: "I never have a set format I just throw a lot of balls in the air and see where they land. Sometimes I don't catch any and I just go off on one. But what I'm trying to do is do things differently. There are only so many ways you can tell a joke – physically or verbally. I try to look at the science of jokes and what makes me laugh – even if it's nonsense. I talk to the voices, I play with words, it's a conundrum of stuff.

"I also like doing the impressions, I have no shame in saying that I absolutely love watching impressionists. I think doing different characters allows me to be someone else. I am actually shy and I have to lose my inhibitions on stage.

"It all fell into place for me when I read Born Standing Up in October 2010. From then on it changed everything. I thought that's it. If I find it funny then it's in. Originality is the key. I want audiences to like me but if they don't that's fine. I'm not a horrible man, I do my thing and go home to my family and watch Match Of The Day.

"I think the important thing is to keep evolving and never stay the same. I do the voices but eventually I might go somewhere else with it. People might like me one year and then decide they don't the next because I've changed something. That's OK with me."

Terry Alderton plays The Comedy Box on Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31, at 8.45pm. Tickets cost £12. Tel 0117 902 0344

Justin Bieber Reveals His Own 'Boyfriend' Secrets

'You're always wrong when it comes to girls, you're always wrong, so just say sorry when things are rough,' Bieber tells E! News.

Selena Gomez is one lucky lady! With the release of his new single, "Boyfriend," Justin Bieber is now sharing his own relationship advice, which seems to be working since he and Gomez have been dating for over a year.

"To be a great boyfriend, you just have to have patience," Bieber told E! News. "You're always wrong when it comes to girls, you're always wrong, so just say sorry when things are rough."

On Bieber's latest single, he makes all the girls' hearts melt when he sings, "If I was your boyfriend, never let you go/ Keep you on my arm, girl, you'd never be alone/ I can be a gentleman, anything you want," but many are wondering if he had Gomez in mind when writing the track.

"No, I mean the song definitely just comes from my heart and whatever that is, whatever is in there," Justin said. "So, I mean, I'll never let you go if you're my girlfriend, I promise."

It seems like Gomez might be sticking around for a while, then! In an interview with Radio Disney's "Celebrity Take With Jake," Bieber may have also revealed the secret as to why their relationship is still going so strong.

"You just have to be honest, that's the first thing, because if you're not honest, then the relationship is just not a good relationship," Bieber said. "At the end of the day, your girl would appreciate you being honest more than lying to her and vice versa."

It probably doesn't hurt the relationship when your boyfriend's idea of a date is to rent out the Staples Center for a private viewing of "Titanic."

So with Bieber gearing up to release Believe and Gomez hard at work shooting "Spring Breakers," will these two find time to possibly collaborate on a track?

"I mean, yeah," Bieber told Billy Bush Tuesday (March 27) on "Access Hollywood Live." "If it would happen before, it's going to happen now. There's no difference. If we do a song together, we do a song together. It is what it is. I think she's taking a little break from music for a while. She's just doing her acting."

Would you want Justin and Selena to collaborate on a song? Let us know in the comments.

'Hunger Games' Rakes In $155 Million At Box Office

'Games' had third-highest opening ever, beating out all 'Twilight Saga' movie openings and every non-sequel ever made.
By Ryan J. Downey

Much like Katniss Everdeen herself, "The Hunger Games"' aim was true. When it comes to box-office records, it's hard to keep a good book down.

"The Hunger Games" beat all of the "Twilight Saga" movies and every single non-sequel ever with the third-biggest opening weekend of all time. The big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the massively popular young adult trilogy collected $155 million domestically, a figure that was just $3.4 million less than "The Dark Knight" opening in 2008. ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is still #1 with $169.1 million). Audiences gave the movie a CinemaScore of "A."

"The Hunger Games" collected an estimated $19.7 million in midnight screenings alone. Librarians, academics and bookworms of all stripes should note that all of the movies in the top five "all-time" list are based on some sort of printed source material. "Potter," "Dark Knight," "Hunger Games," "Spider-Man 3" ($151 million) and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($142 million) were, of course, all drawn from either novels or long-running comic book characters. "The Hunger Games" made another $59.3 million overseas, which is about on par with the debuts of the opening installments in both the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises.

The next installment in author Suzanne Collins' trilogy, "Catching Fire," will see its film adaptation arrive in November of next year. But "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence will be back in theaters well before that. The 21-year-old Oscar nominee's new horror flick, "House at the End of the Street," is due September 21.

MTV News will exclusively unveil the full trailer for the movie online this Thursday morning. The latest from "Hush" director Mark Tonderai will see Lawrence in a role much different than skilled archer Katniss Everdeen, as she'll play a high school student who gets tangled up with a guy who has very dark secrets.

"The Hunger Games" had an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time, which is exactly the same as last weekend's #1 film, "21 Jump Street." The comedically driven movie version of the earnest late '80s TV drama about cops who went undercover in high schools was #2 this week with $21.3 million, for a total of $71 million. "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," which enjoyed the eighth-highest debut for an animated movie earlier this month, was #3 with $13.1 million and a $177.3 million total.

"John Carter" was #4 with $5 million for a $62.3 million total, and "Act of Valor" rounded out the top five with $2 million for a $66 million total. Although those totals are similar, "John Carter" carried a reported production budget of $250 million while "Valor" was made for $12 million.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer, at Rovio has told Bloomberg that there are no plans to release the latest iteration of the popular time sink on Microsoft's mobile platform. Despite the original game still being the most popular app in the Marketplace, Vesterbacka claims that "...it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application." So, until a Series 40 version is confirmed, you bird slingin' Nokia fans will just have to wait.

Update: It seems as if Mr. Vesterbacka misspoke, or his comments were taken our of context. Rovio's CEO, Mikael Hed, told Reuters that "we are working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7," though there is no time frame set for the release yet.

[Thanks, Timothy]
