A BRISTOL roundabout has been named one of the most dangerous for cyclists in the UK, it is claimed.
The St James Barton roundabout near the city centre was highlighted by cyclists as being particularly unsafe, according to a Times survey.
The busy roundabout, also known as the Bear Pit, has four lanes of traffic and cycle routes run out before the intersection.
Councillor Jon Rogers, Executive Member for Care and Health, speaking on behalf of Bristol City Council, told the Post: "We can reassure readers that we are aware of the challenges posed by major junctions like St James Barton.
"Short and medium term plans are being drawn up for this location with funds already allocated.
"Early designs favour a segregated cycleway on the perimeter of the central space, but other designs – with equal priority given to cycle safety – may well come forward."
Adrian Roper, Sustrans regional director for the South West, said "much has been done in Bristol recently to make the city safer for cycling" but added: "However there are still some major junctions like the Bear Pit roundabout that need to be tackled."
