COMMONWEALTH silver medallist and Bristol & West AC athlete Jo Pavey, pictured, is handing out tips for people taking on the Bristol Half Marathon – including tucking into chocolate.
The specialist 5,000m runner is a running ambassador for Children's Hospice South West which is one of the chosen charities for the event on Sunday, September 30.
She said many hours will have been spent out on the road and in the gym training, finding the right pair of trainers for the big day but nutrition is just as important to success.
She said: "Make sure in training you refuel with a sports drink immediately after your long run.
"Then try and have a meal within two hours. When glycogen stores are low after training your body will take up more glycogen in the first two hours. After two hours the body will take up less of the glycogen you consume. It's important to replace glycogen so you recover quicker and crack on with the next training session.
"And eat chocolate."
Karen Edgington, head of fundraising for Children's Hospice South West, said: "We are delighted to be the Bristol Half Marathon's Official Local Charity for 2012 and 2013."
