A FUNDRAISING party was held to mark the birthday of a Kingswood five-year-old who died of meningitis.
Kelsey Smart, right, would have turned six on Friday but after the youngster died her family decided to hold a fundraiser for local charity. The Park School pupil, died in February after contracting meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.
The Smart family, including parents Hannah and Jamie and Kelsey's gran Yvonne Ponter, held the free event at the 37th Scouts base in Kingswood.
There was a bouncy castle, face-painting, and stalls including tombolas, cakes and refreshments.
Mrs Ponter said: "We just wanted to do something fun to remember our much-loved and greatly missed Kelsey on what would have been her sixth birthday. The fun-filled day was a fitting tribute to our little girl."
Kingswood-based Meningitis UK is funding research to find a vaccine to wipe out the deadly disease.
Meningitis UK founder Steve Dayman, who launched the charity after losing his 14-month-old son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982, said: "What happened to Kelsey clearly shows how devastating meningitis is. After losing young Kelsey, the Smart family and their friends have been so dedicated to raising awareness of meningitis and money for Meningitis UK – we say a big thank you to them."
