Clfiton celebrate as three players receive international recognition

THREE Bristol hockey players have been named in Great Britain's Youth Women's Hockey squad of 16 to take part in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in January.
Clifton Ladies Joanna Leigh, 19 , and goalkeeper Caitlyn Jefferies, 19, are joined by Firebrands 17-year-old Lily Owsley.
The squad will be in Australia between January 4-22 with the tournament taking place between January 16-20 to face Australia, China and United States as part of the British Olympic build up to 2016.
The players are now in Malaga for a training camp to begin preparations for the tournament.
Jo Leigh says that she is very excited and looking forward to a whole new hockey experience.
The squad will experience matches in hot conditions against new opposition and be part of a Team GB party consisting of participants in ten other Olympic sports.
Firebrands A suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Newent in Conference North.
Captain  Tom Instone scored with a penalty flick for Firebrands. Former Firebrands Goalkeeper Alastair Hill was brilliant in goal for Newent. Brands A are fifth at Christmas.
Firebrands C had a fantastic 5-1 away win over Bristol and West in West Central One.
Stand-in captain James Self inspired Brands and the goals were scored by James McCrea (2). Ian Lawrence, Steve Walker and Max Eddlestone
Firebrands D produced a brilliant display to beat high-flying Old Bristolians in the Failand derby also in West Central One. Veteran Ian Clapp scored both the Brands goals and goalkeeper Paul Youngs and his defenders kept out seven consecutive short corners awarded after the final whistle.
Yate lost 6-0 against Swansea University while Yate 2nds beat Chippenham B 4-0 with two goals each from Mike Chaney and Johnny Matthews.
Yate B defeated Imperial 7-4 with goals from Darren Ashley (2) Stuart Taylor Mike Taylor Martin Ashley and Chris Gillette (2).
