Sun, sand sea and... aeroplanes

CROWDS of thousands lined Weston- super-Mare seafront and beach to watch a series of breathtaking aerobatic displays at the Grand Pier Air Day.

As temperatures soared, the seaside resort was awash with aircraft enthusiasts craning their necks to the skies.

First up was the Blades Air Display team, which includes some of the world's best acrobatic pilots, flying the ultimate, high performance piston aircraft.

There were gasps of excitement as the world famous Red Arrows flew into the resort, performing an awe- inspiring display across the Weston coastline.

The display was followed by a Battle of Britain Memorial flight including a Dakota and a Spitfire.

The air show continues again today from noon with displays from the world's only aerobatic formation wingwalking team, the Breitling Wing Walkers, and a performance by the Old Flying Machine Company featuring two rare, historic aircraft to the town, a Spitfire Mk IX and a P-51D Mustang.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will then display the Dakota at 3pm, followed by the Spitfire at 3.30pm.

The finale to the two-day show will be at 4pm when the Royal Artillery Parachute Team, the Black Knights, will drop onto the beach into a specially constructed arena on the beach, waving huge Grand Pier flags.
