A NEW £1 million boathouse at Saltford for Bristol University can be built after Sport England agreed to give the remaining £150,000 that was needed to go ahead with the project.
The existing boathouses are more than 100 years old and falling into disrepair.
It is hoped the new facilities will help to put Bristol among the top three universities at rowing within the next three years.
The project is being organised in partnership with Avon County Rowing Club and Monkton Combe School in Bath.
Olympic medallist Natasha Danvers, right, and Sport England yesterday revealed 17 community sports projects in the West of England which have secured Olympic legacy funding.
It is part of Sport England's programme to deliver a London 2012 legacy of increased participation in sport.
The university secured the remaining funding as part of a major fundraising programme to transform the site which already has planning permission. Monkton Combe School has committed £400,000 and the rowing club, £200,000.
Work will begin on site later this year with building set to take up to nine months.
The university's Centenary Boat House Campaign was launched in 2009 and since then, funding has been secured from Bristol Boat Club Alumni, friends of the university and The John Rutley Sports Fund.
